THE HISTORY OF AIRSHIPS

The focus on the development of air transportation dominated the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Even with the advent of the airplane, the airship was envisaged as the “Ship-of-the-air” or “Airship”, and, therefore, more suitable for transporting passengers and cargo.

The Germans were the ones who stood out the most in the construction of the Airships, Ferdinand Von Zeppelin, later Count Von Zeppelin, invested in the project, even without the support of the Kaiser’s government at the time. This boldness led him to successes, which generated the enthusiastic support of the population, starting to count on the support of the German government in the later stages of his projects. From these conceptions, Airships came to be seen as an instrument that would represent a big step in the evolution of Humanity.

Unfortunately, an accident caused by a reaction of the airship’s covering material, and because this aircraft was using hydrogen instead of helium (the original gas planned by the company) allowed an accident that was immortalized by the images of the time, of the 97 people on board, 62 were saved, but even so, the accident shook confidence, and its production and operation was stopped.

From its creation to the disaster that discontinued its use, a total of 135 aircraft were designed, of which 131 entered into service, 81 of them intended for military use. One of the most striking examples was the LZ129 (Hindenburg), having made several trips around the world, at a time when connections between peoples were limited and slow.

Airships were used extensively in World War I. But post-World War II aeronautical cycle focused heavily on jet aircraft, leaving little room for a return to the “Airship”.

Heavy means of transport continue to rely on 19th century solutions, trains, ships, planes and trucks are examples of concepts, technologically updated, but which depend on infrastructures on the ground to be able to operate, with clear limitations of access to different places in the world, with high costs and also environmental impact not aligned with the expectations for the future society.

But all these modes of transport cannot reach the different points of the globe. Airships can address this gap and eventually replace traditional modes in more complex scenarios.

It is indisputable that the speed in technological development has been accelerating several human segments, the aeronautical sector was not left out, current technology allows rescuing the original concept for Airships, introducing a new form of transport.
